Can Vitamins Help Prevent Hair Loss?

Healthy DietA varied diet packed full of fresh food is important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, though getting the balance right can be tricky when you lead a busy life.

Numerous studies have shown that a diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables, good fats and complex carbohydrates can be key in preventing illnesses such as cancer, as well as obesity and heart disease.

But can vitamins help keep hair healthy and potentially prevent hair loss? And if so, which ones should we be including in our diet? Actually, there are a great number of vitamins which can potentially speed up hair growth.

Below is a list of vitamins that can help your hair. Just remember: be careful not to exceed your recommended daily allowances, something easy to do when taking different supplements given you will also receive extra boosts through your food.

The Checklist

Vitamin A: this antioxidant helps produce healthy sebum in the scalp. Find it in fish liver oil, meat, milk, cheese, eggs, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, carrots and certain fruits.

Vitamin C: another antioxidant, this one is great for maintaining hair. It’s present in citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi and some melons, and tomatoes and dark green vegetables.

Vitamin E: this vitamin enhances scalp circulation by increasing the level of oxygen in the blood. It crops up in vegetable oils, raw seeds and nuts, soya beans and leafy green vegetables.

Vitamin B6: helps create melanin that gives hair its colour. You can find it in brewer’s yeast, egg yolk, liver, whole grain cereals, vegetables and some meats.

Vitamin B3 (also called Niacin): like Vitamin E, this one also helps blood circulation on the scalp. It turns up in wheat germ,dates, fish and most meats.

Vitamin B12: required to allow cells to properly replicate. The vitamin is found in most animal products, such as fish, shellfish, meat, eggs and milk.

Vitamin BH (also called Biotin): producer of keratin and necessary for cell growth, this vitamin may prevent greying and hair loss. It appears in whole grain, egg yolk, liver, rice and milk.
