‘Can Hair Loss Treatment for My Hairline Be Used Behind My Ear?’

HairlossANSWERS - Click to Submit Your Query to Our Hair Loss Experts

Name: Owen

Question: Will applying the solution only to the top of the head also help hair behind the ear or should I apply some there as well to help this hair to become healthy again? I ask this because I seem to be losing some hair behind my ear as well as my hairline

Answer: Hi, Owen. This is a fairly tricky question to answer without examining you or at least seeing photos of your hair loss.

Hair Loss Behind EarIt sounds like you are either already using or are interested in using high strength minoxidil to help regrow thinning hair on the top of your head and your receding hairline. Both of these patterns of hair loss are classic signs of Male Pattern Baldness.

The thinning behind your ear that you mention, however, poses something of a conundrum given male hair loss only affects areas around the top of the head. It is possible to have more than one hair loss condition at once though so this could well be the case.

Any shedding – particularly patchy hair loss – from behind the ear is unlikely to be a result of this genetic condition and more likely to be the autoimmune condition Alopecia Areata. This is can strike anywhere on the scalp – in one or multiple locations – and in the majority of cases the hair will regrow naturally. The precise reason why it occurs is unknown, however sudden shock, trauma or extreme stress are often cited as triggers.

We would recommend you do not self-diagnose or self-treat this hair loss behind your ear but instead make an appointment for a free consultation with a hair loss specialist for a professional assessment. They can then explain your precise condition, or conditions, and recommend a comprehensive hair loss treatment course to deal with everything effectively. If you are unable to visit one of our Central London hair loss clinics, this can be done remotely via online consultation.
