Essential oils are concentrated extracts which are taken from flowers, leaves, bark and roots of plants and have been used for therapeutic health benefits since Egyptian times and the age of Cleopatra. Each essential oil is said to support specific functions of the body and several have been used to treat hair loss over the centuries. Those that are said to support hair growth include Bay, Cedarwood, Grapefruit, Jojoba oil, Lavender, Lemon, Rosemary, Roman Chamomile and Ylang Ylang.
But do they work? There was a study published in the Archives of Dermatology which tested the oils on 86 people who had been diagnosed with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes sudden patchy hair loss. The results showed that, of those who applied the oils, 44 percent had improvement after seven months, compared to 15 percent in the control group.
Senior hair loss specialist at the Belgravia Centre, Leonora Doclis, says that, while the study is interesting, the improvement could be due to the massaging of the scalp or the placebo effect. “In order to establish essential oils an effective hair loss treatment for alopecia areata, more studies would need to be carried out.” Doclis explains, “It is important to note that we are talking about alopecia areata which is an auto-immune condition. When it comes to genetic pattern hair loss, essential oils cannot stop the increase in the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes Male Pattern Baldness and Female Pattern Hair Loss.”
In order to tackle these conditions there are only two hair loss treatments that have been proven to work. Minoxidil (for men and women) and Propecia (for men only) have undergone extensive clinical trials and as a result have been licensed by the MHRA and ‘FDA-approved’ for the treatment of hair loss in the UK and USA respectively. Examples of the results that clients at Belgravia have achieved can be seen by looking at our Hair Loss Success Stories below.
While medical science knows relatively little about alopecia areata, specialists at Belgravia have had success treating mild cases of the condition. Examples of the cases we have treated can be seen by viewing our Success Stories and Alopecia Areata Photo Scans below.
