Model and actor Calum Best was recently seen sporting a new, cleaner-cut look after shaving off his bushy beard, which he grew for his role in the film ‘Countryman’.
Struggling with maintenance
The 33 year old, who nicknamed his beard ‘Gandalf’ after the wizard played by Sir Ian McKellen in the film ‘Lord of the Rings’, admitted he struggled with the daily maintenance that beards require, and said he felt “ten years younger without it.”
Hair transplant number three
However the main reason for ditching his beard is that the star will shortly undergo his third hair transplant in two years, at a cost of £6,000.
Calum first started to notice hair loss in his early 20s, and blames his love of wearing tight ponytails in a ‘Croydon Facelift‘ style and using hair bleach, for his receding hairline and thinning locks. However, given his father, the football legend George Best, had clear signs of male pattern baldness, it is more likely that Calum has a hereditary hair loss condition.
Best’s Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant procedure involves transplanting 3,000 hairs from the side of the head to the front of the receding hairline.
Calum said: “These procedures have completely changed my life. They have given me so much more confidence and enabled me to wear my hair just the way I like. The fact that I still have my hair helps me to get film roles.”
Hair loss in not uncommon for men in their 20s, and if you have noticed the first signs of hair loss, it is important to take action as soon as possible. A bespoke hair loss treatment plan can help both to prevent further hair loss and to regrow natural hair without the need for invasive surgery.
Pharmaceutical hair loss treatments vs transplants
It is recommended that anyone considering a hair transplant follow a pharmaceutical hair loss treatment course for at least six months prior to surgery in order to stabilise hair loss and to ensure the hair is in the best possible condition for the surgeon to work with. A maintenance hair loss treatment programme is also advisable following hair restoration surgery in order to avoid the hair around the transplanted area being affected by male hair loss and starting to recede and thin.
Calum decided against using prescribed hair loss medications, having been put off by the potential side effects of Propecia – particularly that sex drive can be affected. Despite the low statistics (only 2% of men are affected in this way), Calum joked, “It may only be two guys in a hundred, but I didn’t want to take the risk.”
Whilst a combination programme featuring both minoxidil and Propecia is generally likely to produce the best results, for men who do not want to take it, there are alternatives to Propecia which may also produce significant regrowth results for men with Propecia thinning hair.
