Baldness in Bollywood

Bollywood stars have a knack for creating waves with their hairstyles but celebrity hasn’t made them immune to the effects of thinning. Some have had to battle with baldness to maintain their crowning glory.

Although a lot of Bollywood icons shave their heads for roles, very few would actually go bald without a fight. Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt famously had hair transplants when their receding hairlines got the better of them. Khan had previously shaved his hair for some of his roles but in real life, the bald look wasn’t for him.

Hair stylist and make-up artist Kaajee Rai says that most of the men who go for the clean-shaven look are bored with their regular hairstyle. It’s not a new trend but until recently it was a look restricted to the bad guys of Bollywood.

Aamir Khan in Ghajinia“Earlier bald was only associated with bad people but this perception has changed and bald now means sexy,” Rai said.

Aamir Khan, for example, lopped his locks in Ghanjini to play the avenging but heroic Sanjay Singhania. It may have been out of necessity for an operation during the movie but Khan proves that bald, in general, can be beautiful. According to Mumbai-based celebrity stylists Shivram K Bhandary and Pompy Hans, however, there are strict rules about going for the bald look.

“This look goes best with people with an egg-shaped head or a round head. If your head is flat then you should avoid it completely because it can look disastrous,” Shivram said. Hans adds that apart from the shape of the head, body structure is also an important factor.

“If you are lean then the bald look is a big no-no. One should have broad shoulders and a good body structure to carry off this look with poise and confidence,” she said.

Unintentional hair loss doesn’t mean you need to panic if you haven’t got the right shaped head or physique (according to Shivram and Hans) to carry off the bald look. There is a common misconception that nothing can be done about hair loss and opting for the shave or a transplant is your only window of opportunity, but this is not the case. There are plenty of hair loss treatments that have been helping men and women retain their hairlines and even grow hair that’s been lost. It’s just a matter of getting the right advice and best suited combination of treatments for you.

Some people are lucky enough to not have to worry about receding hair lines or piles of hair ending up on the shower floor. Sixty-six-year-old Amitabh Bachchan has been blessed with masses of hair and his bald look in the upcoming home production Paa is the workings of clever makeup, not genetics.

Amrish PuriThen there are some celebrities that don’t mind at all if they’re receding or balding. Think Anupam Kher, Rakesh Roshan, and the late Amrish Puri, who gave life to almost 200 villain characters in his career. Bollywood stars ooze glitz and glamour but they’re just like the rest of us and while some worry about hair loss, others embrace it.
