The magic of Hollywood make-up means that hair loss can be fixed in a single session – albeit not permanently, and perhaps not in a way that would appear all that convincing in a wind tunnel or even in real life. But the skills of the movie industry’s hair experts have been put to a different use of late – in a succession of movies where they needed to make their leading actors appear bald.
Bald beats balding
Next month, the industry’s best will be awarded at the 88th Academy Awards in the category of Best Makeup And Hairstyling, and there has been upset in some quarters with the news that the team behind Charlize Theron‘s crop and a largely bald cast in Mad Max: Fury Road have pipped the stylists behind Johnny Depp’s receding hairline in Black Mass to the final shortlist.
Variety magazine reported that Black Mass, which was among the original nominees to survive the first cut back in December, had been expected to be a frontrunner in this category. In mid-January, however, just three films were put forward: Mad Max, The Revenant and a rather more obscure Swedish film entitled The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared.
Some consolation to the Black Mass team – in which Johnny Depp plays mobster James “Whitey” Bulger – comes in the shape of a nomination for the Best Special Make-up Effects In A Feature category at the prestigious Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, which takes place a week before the Oscars. The Mad Max team are also nominated, though in the Period And/Or Character Hair Styling for a Feature category.
Losing it for a role
Whilst many actors, including The Hobbit’s James Nesbitt, are anxious to keep their hair, concerned that balding may lose them roles, sometimes thinning hair is actually required. In the name of realism, Hollywood is more than capable of depicting things that many of us would prefer to avoid, and hair loss is no exception.
Famously, Vincent Kartheiser (pictured), who played Pete Campbell in the hit TV series Mad Men, would shave his hair for each new season to create the illusion of a receding hairline. Other famous method actors to have undergone dramatic follicular transformations for a movie include Christian Bale in American Hustle and Matthew McConaughey in many of his roles, including his Oscar-winning performance in Dallas Buyer’s Club which also earned the hair and makeup team a coveted golden gong.
Away from the lights, cameras and action, it is usually the very opposite kind of look that many men strive to achieve. Male Pattern Baldness, the most common form of hairloss, can strike as early as late teenage years and will affect the great majority of men once they reach retirement age. It can be particularly debilitating as many struggle to come to terms with such a dramatic change in their appearance.
Treatments for hair loss
What some men don’t realise is that proven medications which have been cleared by the UK’s MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency) have shown remarkable success at halting MPB – no hair-piece required. Furthermore, a bespoke male hair loss treatment course which may include a variety of other products to promote a healthy scalp and follicles, can actually see new hair start to grow in a high percentage of cases.
In fact, those in the industry – hair loss, not Hollywood – attribute the healthy-looking and full heads of hair as generally seen on numerous actors during the annual Academy Awards ceremony to specialist hair loss treatment. Although we’d wager a few still employ a few tricks of the styling trade to give them that extra boost for the occasion – after all, they are still on camera!
What those in the public eye especially like about using treatments such as minoxidil and finasteride 1mg is that these courses can be quietly and privately undertaken as regrowth results don’t sprout (and arouse the media’s attention) overnight. If help is sought early on, at the first signs of hair loss, stabilisation of shedding and regrowth are often even harder for others to spot.
