The Asap Science YouTube videos have become popular as a means to make science accessible by explaining popular science via short illustrated videos. From questions such as ‘what came first, the chicken or the egg’ to scientific tips on weight loss, the highly watchable videos enable users to learn interesting facts during their lunch breaks. Their latest video, on how we inherit the genes for balding, is a great way of raising awareness regarding the biggest cause of hair loss.
The video rightly points out that if your mother’s father experienced male pattern baldness, she has at least one ‘X’ chromosome carrying the predisposition to baldness, which means it’s likely that you also carry the gene.
However, the video also makes the interesting point that other genes are linked to hair loss, some of which can be passed from the father, so looking at your grandfather is certainly not a guaranteed way of establishing whether or not you’ll keep your hair into your eighties.
A better way to prevent baldness is by closely monitoring your own hair to establish whether your hairline is receding, or whether an overall thinning is occurring The place to watch is the top of your head rather than the back or sides, as this is where genetic balding occurs. The reason behind this is that DHT, a powerful naturally occurring androgen attacks only hair follicles atop the scalp in those with a genetic predisposition towards balding. DHT causes follicles to shrink, and they subsequently produce weaker, wispy ‘baby’ hairs, and after a prolonged amount of time, no hairs at all.
Illustrating The Point
It’s therefore crucial to act as soon as you notice some recession or more shedding that usual. Many of our male patients are in their 20’s, and the sooner treatment has started, the better chance you have of treating follicles before they become impossible to treat medically. Treatment involves the medication Propecia, which blocks the effect of DHT. For optimum effect this is combined with the second and only other medication licensed and approve by the UK and US medical regulatory bodies for use as a proven hair loss treatment.
Whilst Propecia comes in a set daily dose, minoxidil can be varied in strength and other ingredients can be added to enhance its function. For information about high strength minoxidil and other formulations, please contact the centre.
Once you begin your treatment, your hair loss will be monitored closely, with photographs taken to show you your progress from all angles. Alongside the medication, your dedicated hair loss specialist will ensure all angles relating to hair and scalp care are covered, and treatment boosters such as the FDA cleared LaserComb and specialised shampoos and conditioners will be added to your treatment programme. Hair loss may be genetic, but with a timely personalised treatment plan there is every chance that it can be halted, and hair grown back.
