Patients suffering from glaucoma (a condition caused by excess fluid on the eye) who used the eye drops noticed an increase in eyelash growth.
A recent study conducted by scientists at the University of Bradford found that bimatoprost, the key ingredient in Lumigan, can also stimulate growth in human scalp hair follicles. It could therefore offer a new approach to treating hair loss disorders such as male pattern hair loss.
DHT, a male sex hormone or androgen, is acknowledged as the main cause of male hair loss in those with genetically predisposed hair follicles. Bimatoprost acts on a different receptor in the hair follicle that is unconnected with androgens and can counteract the problems that DHT causes.
The study was based on living scalp tissues obtained from donors, and the next stage will test directly on participants of both sexes. Results are expected by the end of this year.
Don’t Want To Wait?
Whilst we welcome any new developments in the treatment of hair loss, we understand that many of our current and future clients will be unwilling to wait the months, or perhaps years, that it will take to get Lumigan’s key ingredient bimatoprost licensed by the MHRA as a treatment for hair loss.
